Kitchen Drawer Magazine: Lauren-Ashley

July 1st, 2011

Written by: Bobby Wheaton

When Lauren-Ashley’s father, Mark Redmond,
approached me last winter about designing
an album cover for his daughter’s Country
music debut, I didn’t quite know what to expect.

During our meeting that afternoon, Mark
said, “Hey, my daughter Lauren is recording some tracks
downtown with Trey Roth, and we’d like to put out an
EP in a couple of months. Aren’t you a graphics person?
Can you design something for us?”

Being an avid music fan, I responded with interest, “Do
you have anything I can listen to?” Mark grabbed his cell
phone, opened a video, and said, “This is sort of rough, but
you can hear where it’s going.” The audio was distorted
coming through the phone speakers, so he suggested we
might pull up his email because he had an audio track
there. The next thing I knew Mark culled a video clip from
the studio, and hit “play.”

The clip was blurry but exciting. As the camera panned, I
could see recording equipment scattered about; Lauren sat
anxiously behind a microphone, surrounded by an army of
guitars and electronics. The first couple of seconds into the
song,I felt a calm come over me. “This is really good. This
is Nashville-good,” I thought to myself, Mark smiled back
at me as I reassured him, “She’s really got something!”

I am betting Lauren has been singing effortlessly since she
was a little girl. My first reaction when I heard her voice
was, “This girl is ready for radio-like right now!” She likes
to write songs too. Lauren wrote the second track on her
EP, “Cold November,” with her sister Haley and co-wrote
a couple of other tracks as well.

Back in the days of JohnnyCash, Kris Kristofferson, and the like, singers wrote songs
about what life threw at them with each passing moment.
Unfortunately, that doesnt happen so much anymore.

Most importantly, Lauren has really good instincts. Each
time I spoke with her on the phone or exchanged emails
with her, she knew exactly what she wanted in terms of
packaging, marketing, and her overall image.

Lauren cut six tracks from those studio recordings for
her first EP, but when she walked on stage in Griffin, Ga.
for her CD release party in May, she rifled through several
other tunes before delving into her own music. Dynamic,
rocking covers such as Heidi Newfield’s ‘Johnny & June”
(an homage to Johnny and June Carter Cash) and Carrie
Underwood’s “Last Name” songs I wasn’t familiar with at the time, but eemed to fit perfectly with her pure,
Southern tone. The band suited her well and took liberties
to drive a rock-edge to the songs. There was a lot of
energy in the room that night, the majority of which was
generated by the 19-year-old at center stage. She found her
footing early, and brought the crowd into each song she
sang with passion.

As I drove home from my first Lauren-Ashley show, a
thought came to my mind. “Did I just witness a star being
born tonight?” Predicting success in the music industry
is difficult. There are so many factors besides a person’s
voice that go into a winning package. Record companies
often claim to have the Midas touch, but they fall flat much
of the time. It is especially difficult to spot talent at such
an early stage of a career, when there’s no momentum or
chatter yet.

Lauren and her new band put on a great show that night,
but will some of these new records eventually reach the
Country radio rotation? It’s anybody’s guess. Her family has
made every effort to offer Lauren the opportunity to make
it in the music business. As Mark told me when we first
spoke, “We believe in her, and we want to do everything
at the highest level possible.” Her family’s love and support,
coupled with her innate talent, have given Lauren the opportunity
to share her gift with the world. When all of their
dreams come to fruition, you will without a doubt find a
proud community cheering her on from the audience.

You can buy Lauren-Ashley’s self-titled EP
from Serendipity in Griffin (Belk Shopping
Ctr,) or download it from iTunes. Make sure

dates, and follow Lauren’s Facebook fan page

Griffin Country Singer Gains Statewide Fan Base

June 27th, 2011

By; Sheila Marshall

For 19-year-old aspiring country singer Lauren-Ashley, music has always been a part of her life.

“I’ve been singing literally since I could talk”, she said. “My parents couldn’t believe it when I would sing songs in my car seat. They were surprised I know all the words to the songs on the radio.”

From the songs of her Childhood, Lauren-Ashley moved on to performing in church and school talent shows, eventually placing second in state competition in her senior year of high school.

After graduation, she went on to college at Georgia Southern University where her love of music led her to win “GSU Idol”, a homecoming-week competition based on the popular “American Idol”.

With the unending support and encouragement of her family, Lauren-Ashley then began to reassess her future.

“My family has been extremely supportive through the entire thing. They have been nothing but wonderful and it’s awesome,” she said. “I am so thankful to have a family to push me if I ever want to give up.”

Soon afterward, Lauren-Ashley took a leap of faith as she chose to dedicate her time and effort toward a recording career. “I began working with Trey Roth, of Black Cat Studios, in Griffin—my hometown—and we decided to record a CD,” Lauren-Ashley said.

The self-titled recording is filled with personal meaning for Lauren-Ashley, as she not only sings, but also writes her own songs. “They are all originals, I have my stamp all over them,” she said.

Since its release, Lauren-Ashley’s CD has proven to be a popular local favorite, with brisk sales at local stores, as well as on CDBaby.com and iTunes. Her debut recording can still be found locally and on laurenashleymusic.com.

“It’s been really awesome. We’ve had really great reviews on it,” she said.

Far beyond being only a local favorite performer, Lauren-Ashley has gained quite a following statewidep; proven by her current status as a semi-finalist in the Georgia Country Female Artist of the Year competition. “They hold a competition every year at Georgia-Country.com and I’ve been nominated for that award,” she said. “I recently found out I’m a semi-finalist, and that’s very exiting,”

This recognition is made even sweeter by the fact that the results are all fan-based, with votes being casted online.

Even as she relishes the commercial success she is experiencing, it is when she performs that she finds the greatest joy, and that is exactly what she intends to pursue when she takes yet another huge step in the hope of furthering her music career by moving to Nashville later this summer. There she intends to finish college and also, “ try out this music thing.”

“Everybody says they want to make it to the top and be famous. Ultimately, that is a goal of mine, but initially, I would love to sign a recording deal and be a touring artist,” she said. “I know it takes time and you have to start slowly. It’s definitely very hard work, but it’s worth it. Whether it’s five or ten years from now, that’s my goal—going all the way. I don’t think I would ever be completely happy doing anything else but performing. It’s so cool to be there, in that moment, and see people, total strangers, singing my songs—songs I wrote. It’s just an incredible feeling.”

GSU Idol Advances Career, Releases Album

April 26th, 2011

April 12, 2011

After winning GSU Idol last year, Lauren-Ashley Redmond plans to release her first album at the end of the month. The freshman public relations major born in Griffin, Ga. has produced an album since her win and has been busier than she ever intended. “I have had a lot of changes since producing this album. My schedule is so busy, which I’m not so used to and I am traveling a lot due to rehearsals and performing in different areas,” said Redmond. Redmond recalls what it was like to be a part of GSU Idol and how it has had an impact on her life. “The competition was so much fun,” she said. “It was a lot of hard work by the people putting it on as well as for the contestants, but it was worth it. ”In describing the competition, Redmond said, “We performed three rounds for the judges. Each round, fewer contestants would advance until the final round, which was narrowed down to three girls.” The three songs the singer performed were Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” Carrie Underwood’s “Last Name,” and Rascal Flatt’s “God Bless the Broken Road.” “I was so excited and honored to be chosen to represent Georgia Southern as the GSU Idol,” said Redmond.

Once Redmond won the competition, she soon left for Black Cat Studio with her new producer Trey Roth. “When I first walked into the studio, I was so excited. My producer, Trey, was great. He was so excited about this project and was such a pleasure to work with,” said Redmond. Since she began, Redmond found many things she has enjoyed about recording. “My favorite part of the recording process was watching the musicians record their parts of the songs,” she said. “They are all so talented and it was so exciting to watch them record.”

Redmond gets her inspiration from music, along with her own personal experiences and from her favorite artists. “My inspiration is my love of music. I’ve always had a passion for music and I am excited to share it with the world,” she said. Regarding her favorite music, Redmond said, “Although I love all kinds of music, country music is my thing. I have listened to country music ever since I was little.” Her favorite artists are Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood and Stevie Nicks.

When it comes to writing her music, Redmond enjoys keeping everything new. “All of the songs on my album are originals. Although I love all of the songs on the album, my favorite would probably be ‘Cold November,’ which is going to be one of my singles,” said Redmond. “It is such a beautiful song and is based off a relationship that both my sister and I experienced. The lyrics are so powerful and meaningful,” said Redmond. Redmond co-wrote with her sister and songwriter Jeff Chandler  “I don’t produce cover songs on my album, but I do perform them during my shows. My favorites to perform are Miranda Lambert’s, but I also enjoy performing some older songs by ‘Dixie Chicks’ and even some male artists such as Bryan Adams,” said Redmond. .

Lauren-Ashley Redmond’s self-titled debut album will be released on April 20, 2011 in select stores and will be available on iTunes and CDBaby.com.
